Dear Hastings Democrats,
Springtime has arrived, and with it new business for the Hastings Democratic Committee.
At our regular monthly meeting last Wednesday, the Committee voted to endorse Congressman Jamaal Bowman for re-election (Congressional District 16) and Acting State Supreme Court Justice Veronica Hummel for NY Supreme Court (9th Judicial District). Congressman Bowman will be on the ballot in the June 28 primary election, while Justice Hummel will be seeking a nomination at the August judicial convention of the NY State Democratic Committee.
We also received several special guests:
County Executive George Latimer provided a COVID update and mentioned some important new initiatives provided for in the new County budget, including the expansion of a mobile mental health unit, the Crisis Prevention and Response Team.
Deputy County Executive Ken Jenkins shared information about the County’s Catalystproject for economic development, including programs for women and minority and veteran business owners.
County Legislator MaryJane Shimsky highlighted the launch of an expanded Child Care Scholarship opportunity for County families.
Elizabeth Felber, Supervising Attorney at The Legal Aid Society (and a past chair of this Committee) shared her views on the current bail reform debate and encouraged our support of State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousin’s advocacy on this issue as part of the State budget negotiations.
Hon. Veronica Hummel discussed her candidacy for a full term as NY State Supreme Court (a position she is now serving in an acting-only capacity).
The Committee also voted unanimously to support an upcoming citizen-led effort regarding the timing of village elections. Currently, Hastings holds its village election in March. Should sufficient petition signatures be collected for a ballot proposition, Hastings voters would be able to decide whether to keep our elections in March or consolidate them with the general election in November. Further on the topic of elections, we received an update from Co-Vice Chair Vanessa Merton on A01115C, a bill our Committee has voted to support, which is currently in the NY State Assembly and designed to improve the security of our voting machines and systems. Please reach out if you'd like more information on these or any other matters. A happy Easter and Passover to all who celebrate!
Onward,
Cassandra Sweet
Chair, Hastings-on-Hudson Democratic Committee
